Naija Music Stars that didn’t shine in 2016

Some stars came into the Nigerian music scene and like meteorite, they were up in the sky, shining like light and having so many fans endeared to their heats.  But in 2016, it was as if their light started dwindling. When so many thought they might have been cooking something in the studio hoping such would be released before the end of the year, these stars lived on past glory while new acts sprang up and some of their contemporaries shone brighter. Saturday Beats brings some of the artistes whose light didn’t shine so brightly in 2016
Omawumi
Not just a few believed Omawunmi would excel going by her performance during the Idols reality show that shot her into limelight in 2007. She has cemented her name as an achiever and force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian entertainment scene. Her sophomore album, ‘Lasso of Truth,’ which was released in 2015 was said to be a commercial success. Omawumi managed to break that jinx where just male artistes had held sway in the music scene for a long time.
But fast forward to 2016, not much was heard from the singer musically. Thank God for social media anyway, but for Instagram where the babe would always post one or two stuff, her presence would have dwindled considerably.
Yes, she managed to release a song with Grammy Award winner, Angelique Kidjo but did it have a very positive impact in her career in 2016? No!
Anyway, fans still love her and hope that not only would she change her hairstyle in 2017, she would also come up with better and bigger hits.
Waje
And like her bestfriend Omawumi, Waje was almost pushed to the background this year.
Save for ‘The Voice Nigeria’ which kind of kept her busy as a judge in the reality show, Waje’s impact in the music scene was almost insignificant.
Waje has been  busier on social media than in the studio this year. Yes, fans got to know more about her grown up daughter and her cool dresses which she proudly showed off every now and then. And of course, she also proudly showed off her figure as she transformed from a plus-sized babe to a much trimmer lady.
The last time Waje released her self-titled album was in May 2013. The album was critically acclaimed but ever since then, she has been releasing single tracks.
This year, the music diva has been able to release only one track which she titled ‘Ominiknowest.’
It was once reported that the singer planned to take a four year break from music. So the question is, has she started the hiatus?
Chidinma
Chidinma ‘Miss Kedike’ Ekile is a typical example of the expression that great things come in small packages.
The Project Fame winner started strong after the competition winning any award that she was nominated for. One of such milestone awards is the Kora and she was the first female musician to get to the number one spot on the MTV Base top ten countdown. With her trailblazing success, she won the admiration of many as several celebrities have openly confessed that they have a crush on the petite damsel.
The girl didn’t allow her small frame to deter her from conquering the music industry. But that was long ago.
This year, Chidinma was busier arousing people’s curiosity as to whether she is dating artiste, Flavour or not especially when she deleted all the pictures on her social media page save for hers and Flavour’s.
It seems that the star is fast fizzling out of the industry. Not much has been heard from the singer musically this year. Her recent song, ‘Fall in Love,’ which she released some weeks ago does not have the same buzz that always characterises songs.
So many fans expect Chidinma to wake up in 2017.
D’banj
‘Oh, how the mighty has fallen’ would certainly be the expression on so many peoples’ minds especially when they think of the self-acclaimed entertainer and Kokomaster, D’banj.
With his ‘nothing-dey-happen’ attitude since he broke up from his partner and friend Don Jazzy, D’banj has yet to make any strong impact musically.
But thank God for his song ‘Emergency’ which was released early in the year, it was a good work and so many people felt D’banj had finally survived the break-up.
Alas, his ‘Focus,’ ‘If no be God,’ ‘Breaking New’ and ‘Gifted’ didn’t make any impact at all. D’banj needs to step up his game in 2017, otherwise his career would land in Emergency Room!
Iyanya
Well, thank God for ‘Krukere,’ nobody would have known Iyanya apart from the fact that he was a sensation at the then Project Fame competition.
Another thing that stood him out is his sexy body which makes ladies- old and young – go wild! But how has that affected his career in 2016?
His controversial exit from Ubi Franklin’s Triple M Records made more headlines than the release of his following songs, ‘Type of woman,’ ‘Nothing Mega,’ ‘Yoga song,’ ‘Sukumma,’ ‘Why,’ and ‘Heartbeat.’ Just a handful of people would have ‘felt’ the songs.
With his new marriage to Don Jazzy’s Mavin, who knows, 2017 might be a better year as hopefully, the ace producer would give Iyanya his Midas Touch.
Wande Coal
It seems Wande Coal found his sound late this year with the new song, ‘Iskaba,’ which he released few weeks ago. Before then, nothing much was heard from the young man. His first album, ‘Mushin to Mo’hit’ was a collector’s item but his sophomore album, ‘Wanted,’ which was released in 2015 was not really wanted by a lot of people as many have described the album as a flop.
Hopefully 2017 would be better for the dreadlock wearing singer.

The good, bad and ugly side of Nigerian entertainment scene in 2016

Today marks the end of 2016 and indeed, the entertainment industry has had so much drama and events that trailed it this year. Saturday Beats brings you some of the exciting episodes in the industry this year.
Popular Nigerian actress, Funke Akindele, gave love another shot this year as she tied the knot with her musician beau, Abdul Rasheed Bello, in a quiet wedding ceremony in London. The star actress who was once married to Kehinde Oloyede said that she and her hubby opted for a quiet wedding because it was “right by them” and further apologised to friends and family.
Monalisa Chinda and Victor Coker
Delectable actress Monalisa Chinda also got hit by cupid for a second time this year as she got married to Victor Coker. According to the actress, she had known her husband since she was 14 years old. While they held the traditional wedding in Port-Harcourt, the white wedding took place in Greece and it was attended by family and close friends of the couple.
Kalu Ikeagwu and Ijeoma Eze
Nollywood fine boy, Kalu Ikeagwu, who used to be the most eligible bachelor, in town broke so many ladies’ hearts when he got married this year.  Ikeagwu got married to the love of his life Ijeoma Eze. They started the wedding journey in Enugu State where they had their introduction ceremony and the beautiful couple had their white wedding ceremony in Lagos.
Seun Akindele and Toun Olorunjedalo
On July 9, 2016, Seun Akindele and Toun Olorunjedalo tied the knot in an elegant wedding ceremony which officially made them husband and wife. It was a fun filled event that was well attended by Nollywood stakeholders, family and friends of the couple.
Blossom Chukwujekwu and Maureen Ezissi
The wedding ceremony of Nollywood actor, Blossom Chukwujekwu and Maureen Ezissi was star-studded. This beautiful couple had been friends for a long time; they took their love story to another level by celebrating their wedding in grand style this year.
…And the centre couldn’t hold
Tiwa Savage and Tee Billz
Nigerians woke up to a rude shock on April 28, when they saw what Tee Billz had written on his Instagram wall. He literally x-rayed his marriage to Tiwa Savage and gave hints that their marriage was troubled. While Nigerians were trying to digest all what he had vomited, the news of Tee Billz trying to attempt suicide filtered into town before he was reportedly rescued by Peter Okoye and Banky W. Days after, Tiwa released a tell-it-all video that showed the couple had been patching things up for a long time. The news of the couple making a comeback has been flying around but nothing official has yet come up. Tiwa and Tee Billz got married at a well-attended destination wedding in Dubai on April 26, 2014.
Afeez Abiodun and Mide Martins
This household would not forget 2016 in a hurry as it was a year that tested the strength of their love. The union of this couple was on the brink of crashing but for the quick intervention of family and friends, everything is back to normal. But that does not mean that one would forget all that was posted online mostly by Mide. The actress claimed her husband moved out of their matrimonial home abandoning her and their two children. However, the issue has since been resolved and their 13-year-old marriage is still intact.
Ubi Franklin and Lilian Esoro
Although none of the duo has come out to publicly speak up about the state of their marriage, according to their gestures especially online, it seems all is not well with the household. Recently, Lilian removed her husband’s name from her Instagram account and reverted to her maiden name. Even though the union has produced a lovely child, it was alleged the couple started having marital issues almost as soon as they got married. Ubi and Lilian got married on November 1, 2015.
Muma Gee and Prince Eke
The drama between this couple became public a few weeks ago when the husband posted on his Instagram page that his wife abandoned him and their children to frolic in Abuja. Shortly after, he posted a picture with his children with the caption ‘single father’.
Subsequently, his wife also posted her picture and her children with her husband conspicuously absent. Not just a few deduced that all may not be well with their marriage.
Patter of feet arrived

OJB
The light eventually dimmed for Babatunde Okungbowa, popularly known as OJB after a long battle with kidney-related disease.
OJB died in June and he was mourned by so many people, including his family and friends.
Nomoreloss
It came as a rude shock to so many people in March when the news of the death of Muyiwa Oshinuga hit the airwaves. Popularly known as Nomoreloss, the celebrity musician allegedly died of typhoid. His friends and fans were devastated by his demise.
Fred Ebhoria Ekata
This actor was known for his role as an elder in any village community and he was often one of the bad guys involved in voodoo. Fred died on May 17, 2016 from a kidney-related disease which plagued him for a year and left him bed-ridden.
Baby Daddy drama
Burna boy
Earlier in the year, a lady, Uju Stella, came out to claim that she was carrying the popular singer’s baby. Although Burna Boy never came out to deny or accept the fact, in a mock song, he mentioned that he had sex with the young lady only once.
Wizkid
In April, a young Guinean American model, Binta Diamond Diallo, blew the whistle that she had a baby that was fathered by Wizkid and to show proof, she posted a picture of a DNA test on her Instagram page to confirm her claim. So far, the singer who already had a child from another woman has not spoken on the issue.
Runtown
Just when his fans were glad that the singer had dedicated his life to Christ by posting on Instagram  pictures of him in church and a message that he had stopped smoking, a young lady came out claiming that the singer impregnated her. To show proof of her claim, she further posted a picture of the baby scan.
More drama
Olamide/Don Jazzy fight
The year actually started on an eventful note in the entertainment industry with the drama between Olamide and Don Jazzy.
The controversy actually started at the Headies which was held early in the year and both artistes hurled insults at each other.
However, Olamide apologised to Don Jazzy and they sort of made up.
PSquare break up
Whether it was a publicity stunt or not, the supposed break-up of twin singers, P Square, made headlines this year. The guys at different times came up with stories on their social media handles suggesting all wasn’t well in their household.
Their brother/manager Jude, wasn’t left out in the drama as one of the twins, Peter, insisted that Jude wasn’t their manager again.
Anyway, the guys probably realised they were better off as one than two as they almost lost so many fans. To show they are united, they released a hit, ‘Bank Alert,’ which is ruling the airwaves at the moment.

Truth about Falz and I –Simi

Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye, simply known as Simi, discloses to The Entertainer the truth about her relationship with Falz, after both artistes were reported to have shared a kiss on stage after performing their most recent joint track Chemistry at the Industry Nite, recently.
The Nigerian singer and songwriter who debuted in 2006 with a single titled Ogaju also talks about her upbringing, career, future plans and more in this interview.
When you were setting out in the music industry, what impact did you hope to make?
I have been singing since I was a child. That was gospel music but in the mainstream, I am pretty young in the industry. I believe if you are working at something, you live like the best can come out of it and I believe so myself that good things will always come to me. Here I am.
How successful would you say you are since you became a big name in the industry?
I wouldn’t say I’m a big success yet, because I still have so much to achieve. There is so much to learn. I have achieved part of it by the grace of God but there are still so many battles I want to win and conquer. If you ask me about my role model, I would say people like Ladelle in terms of what they have achieved and that I want to do as well.
Recently, you debunked the rumour that you were dating Falz but that sounds difficult to believe seeing how close you guys have been lately. What do you have to say about your relationship with Falz?
Falz is my friend. Falz is also my music partner for now and I feel that is what people really need to know for now.
Who is your kind of man?

I like a man I can vouch for. I like a man that has a great sense of humour and kind.
Can you date a poor man?
Of course, I have dated men that are not rich (laughs).
What do you hope to have achieved in your career, in no distant time?
I want more recognition. More people across the world to get to hear my music. The name Simi should have been in more houses and more heads.
How much of encouragement did you get from your parents, while coming up?
My mum did a lot specially for me. I remember when I just started recording; she used to give me money to go to the studio and always supported me. She is not like the typical Nigeria mum who would tell you to finish school, get a job and marry. She always wanted me to pursue things I wanted. She never dictated to me.
Who would you attribute your success to?
It’s first about God.
Can you go nude for any price?
Completely naked? No, I can’t.
Really? What if the price is right?
I can’t. Money is not everything. I have always felt that way. I can’t. I am even the wrong person to ask. You buy everything and the money is gone. I am not really saying it is wrong. If you want to go nude, you go nude because you don’t care, not because of money. That means you are cheap.
Like some of your colleagues in the industry, what else do you hope to delve into aside music?
I have other things I want do but still all about music too. I am a mix engineer and also a songwriter. There are things I could actually still dabble into .I studied Mass communication and I have so many things to explore if I want to.
How did you transit from being a media person to being a singer?
Mass Communication is like a lifestyle. There are things I learnt in school that I still adapt to music. So, I won’t say I transited.
What is the craziest thing a male fan has ever done to you?
I can’t remember. Yes, one time I was driving and a guy was on a bike coming behind me. He waved at me and tried to stop me. He begged me to stop and I did. He just said he would like to take pictures with me. He came inside my car and we took pictures. I think that was cute.
Any regret in life?
No, I am not the regretting type. When I make mistakes, I only see how better I could have done it the next time. I try not to dwell on things I have done in the past that I can’t change. I don’t think everything I have done has made me what I am today.
What’s your perception of   Nigerian music industry?
We have come a long way. We have legends like King Sunny Ade that we look up to. We also have people that are blazing the trail right now. We even have people abroad who come in to learn from us.
We have come a long way but there is still so much to learn, to improve on, especially as per sales and copyright. Overall, we have come a long way.

Era of sexual explicit songs and videos will soon pass, says Onyeka Onwenu Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/12/era-sexual-explicit-songs-videos-will-soon-pass-says-onyeka-onwenu/

Elegant musical stallion, Onyeka Onwenu, is one legendary singer of the old class to be reckoned with. Unlike some of her contemporaries, how she has been able to remain relevant in an industry that has evolved from what it used to be, is nothing short of talent, class, style , consistency, and quality of message usually found in her music.

exclusive chat with Showtime, the ageless singer who never fails to exploit any opportunity to impact from her wealth of knowledge and experience laid bare her mi nd on the Nigerian music industry. According to her, in a short while, Nigerian musicians will abandon the use of sexual explicitness in their songs and videos, to concentrate on doing good music that will stand the test of time. “The industry is huge, it’s growing, and it’s good. Those who won’t make it won’t make it, those who quickly learn what it takes would have staying power, and it’s not everybody that would stay in the next few years; but then, the industry has a way of sorting itself out. It’s either you have your fans or you don’t, its either the music is good and people are buying it or they aren’t buying it. So, these things naturally take care of themselves, the more the merrier, let people who are talented come in, let the young people realise that they can do well in this industry, and we pray that they do good music, meaningful music, even if they are shaking bum-bum at this time. At some point, they would drop the shaking and they will begin to talk about the serious issues, do beautiful and inspiring music. It’s all a process, it will happen”, she said. She advised young artistes to be open-minded so as to grow in their chosen careers. “Remain open and teachable; never think you have arrived, know who your source is. Till today I know I’ve not arrived, so keep tapping from God because it never ends. If you allow Him to use you, the music and the artistry, He, will continue to use you to bless others”, she advised. When asked her counsel on the prevalent failure in celebrity relationships, she said; “I think there is a general pressure across society, and it’s not just among the celebrities; instead of blowing it up all the time, I think we should show some understanding. And also respect their privacy. I know people like good stories but we need to realise that these are human beings who are dealing with issues and allow them to deal with it”, she appealed.

COPA Lagos thrills with potpourri of shows

COPA Lagos thrills with potpourri of shows
•The crowd at COPA Lagos
This year’s edition of the annual COPA Lagos show which took place at the Eko Atlantic City has taken art and entertainment a notch higher in Nigeria, having treated revelers to a variety of high profile shows.
It was the best of time for fun seekers who were treated to an international football match, a runway show of local designers with Nigerian Beachwear 2017 collection and a series of musical performances featuring some of the best of Nigerian artistes.
At the event which had in attendance notable dignitaries including the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the crowd was full of merry and cheers for the performers.
The day had begun with a thrilling beach soccer match between Enyimba FC beach soccer team and the Pepsi Football Academy. Next was a celebrity match between Team Dbanj and Team Victor Ikpeba. Team Dbanj included Peter Okoye of P-Square, Samson Adamu, CEO of Kinetic Sports, organisers of the event, and popular Beat FM OAP, Jimi. Ikpeba’s team had other ex-Nigerian internationals like like Aloy Agu in goal, Waidi Akanni, Victor Agali, Mutiu Adepoju, Ifeanyi Udeze and popular celebrity, Frank Edoho of the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire fame. The Ex-Internationals won the match 2-1.
The main competition on the day was a game between Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles and the Switzerland national beach soccer team. The Swiss lived up to their pre-tournament billing, beating Nigeria 8-3 in an electrifying encounter, which also saw the emergence of its star player, Noel Ott emerging as the Man of the Match

I was rejected at many music reality shows – Ogoor

Rising singer, Ogochukwu Oye, aka Ogoor has revealed how she was rejected at many music reality shows. The revelation is coming after the artiste made debut with her first single, ‘You Are Mine’.
“It wasn’t an easy journey for me,” she said, adding that she thought she could kick-start her career through reality show but to no avail.
I was rejected at many music reality shows – Ogoor
“I attempted almost all the reality shows but I just wasn’t lucky to make it through and like I say, some people will kick off their career through that means and many of us will hit the limelightthrough working meticulously and righteously to put our music out there,” the Awka, Anambra State-born artiste noted.
On her kind of music, the singer explained that her genre can’t be confined to a particular type, as her soulful ballads aim at appealing to the hearts of many.
When asked if she sings the usual R&B or Gospel, Ogoor stressed that she sings about anything and everything worthy of creation as she taps her inspiration from people around, her family, friends as well as her personal experience
“My kind of music can’t be boxed in one genre because for me, I am a musician and music flows from my soul, I write and also see others write but I can tell you when I sing, it’s for a purpose, probably to share a particular experience or someone’s experience.
“I can do any genre, I can sing but my rhythm for now has seen me launch my career with a low tempo yet appealing and alluring to the ears. Music means so much to me and my passion for music has always been from my childhood days,” she said

Uyo returns with Akwa Ibom Xmas Carol

Uyo returns with Akwa Ibom Xmas Carol
•As Glo-support show holds this weekend
Perhaps the next event that would enliven the mood of the people of Akwa Ibom State, following last week’s collapse of the Reigners Bible International church building that left several worshipers dead, will be the annual Akwa Ibom State Christmas Carol Festival, billed to take place this Saturday, at the Uyo Township Stadium.
Next generation network, Globacom, which supported the event in 2015 has announced its readiness to sponsor the event  again. Many believe that the event will double as a thanksgiving service for the State at this time. Glo returns as an exclusive telecoms partner for this year’s edition.
The festival, with the theme: “Let Our King Be Lifted High”,  is expected to be broadcast live by major television stations, including African Independent Television (AIT), Channels TV, DSTV  (on Africa Magic and dedicated channels) and AKBC.
Globacom explained that the success of last year’s carol which had award-winning artistes from all over the world, including two Grammy award winners,  informed its decision to sponsor the festival again this year.
“We fully identify with the Akwa Ibom Christmas Carols festival which has become one of the biggest crowd-pulling events of the Yuletide season. Our desire is to follow the passion of Nigerians and connect them with their passion,” the company said in a statement released in Lagos.
According to Globacom, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has already sent a message of appreciation to them for accepting to sponsor this year’s event.
For the 2016 edition of the festival, multiple award-winning international gospel singer, Don Moen, the PRM band from the United Kingdom, the Kenya Boys Choir and the Kayamba Africa Choral Ensemble are billed to perform.  Other artistes who will entertain guests at the event are some of the country’s top gospel musicians including Sammie Okposo, Buchi, Steve Crown, Elijah Oyelade, Rev. Fr. Patrick Edet, Esther Edoho, Julius Nglass and Perfecta Ekpo.
The Ibom Orchestra, The Ibom Brass Band and the Akwa Ibom State Government Choir, which put up a brilliant performance in the 2015 edition, will also take turns to thrill the audience. The climax of the show will be the globally acclaimed 10,000-man choir which has a record of rendering remarkable Christmas Carols in a manner that had never been experienced before.
The event is recognised worldwide, and it was cited in the Guinness Book of Records when, in the 2012 edition, it featured a 9,999-member choir which was reputed to be the largest carol choir on the continent at that time.
